the dirty war

peaceful protests took place this past saturday in buenos aires in rememberance of the military coup that brought to power a brutal junta 31 years ago. that military dictatorship ruled from 1976-1983 and the state-sponsered terrorism that was carried out in agrentina under jorge rafael videla's military government was termed the Guerra Sucia- the dirty war.

it is estimated, by the National Commission on the Disappearence of Persons (CONADEP), that 9,000 people were "disappeared" during the dirty war. human rights orgs. bring the estimate closer to 30,000.

if you are interested in knowing more about this painful time in argentina's history, i recommend a foreign film called "the official story." there is also the more recent "imagining argentina."

during our church service sunday morning we took a moment to remember the disappeared and their families and those around the world who have suffered and continue to suffer at the hands of injustice. together we sung a song written by leon gieco, deemed the argentine bob dylan, that became the unoffical anthem during those years.

the lyrics are powerful.

it was impossible to do the lyrics justice in an english translation, so this is for those of you who read spanish.

two years ago...

march 5th marked the day two years ago that we moved here to buenos aires. it's been amazing to see God's provision in every area of my life- my home, my children, our church, our ministry here and the growing relationships with the youth.

it's been a great ride.

and today was another reminder that life in a latin american country is never dull...

we arrived in argentina with our resident visas in hand and have been trying ever since to obtain our ID cards. yup two years for an ID. each time we think we're close, that there couldn't possibly be another setback, a "kind" offcial informs us that we need a new translation of this document or a copy of that particular page of our passport or a special seal on this piece of paper, "didn't i mention that before?" "uh, no."

today's request was for a letter from the US embassy affirming that the name on my birth certificate and the married, hyphanated name on my passport do in fact both indicate that i am me. to see if this letter does the trick, stay tuned...

and besides, i now have this very official piece of paper to avoid any confussion in the event that there are any other adriana dakimowiczes out there applying for argentine ID's.
